Recent Work

Since its founding in late 2010, Rowling Law & Strategy has acted on a number of significant matters including:

- the creation of the Brisbane Global Tens including all contractual arrangements with participating teams, local and state government sponsors, rugby organisations, broadcasters, venue owners and other suppliers and sponsors,

- negotiating bespoke contracts with various oil and gas multinationals for the use of proprietory equipment developed by New Zealand client,

- the sale of New Zealand's largest avocado operation,

- acting for Auckland Council on its proposed public private partnership for "Skypath", a walkway and cycleway to be attached to Auckland Harbour Bridge,

-the sale of a major manufacturer and distributor of packaging products to New Zealand's agriculture sector,

-Te Rarawa and Ngai Takoto's joint venture with Landcorp in relation to one of the largest dairy operations in Northland,

-the majority of contractual arrangements relating to the hosting of Rugby World Cup 2011 in Auckland,

-the successful bid by Auckland to host the 2017 World Masters Games and subsequent governance and contractual arrangements,

-the Auckland sponsorship of the Auckland leg of the 2011 ITU  Triathlon World Series and the 2012 ITU Triathlon World Final,

-Auckland's host city arrangements for the Cricket World Cup and the FIFA U20 World Cup,

-various long term gas contracts between Methanex and Todd Energy, Shell, Genesis and the Maui Joint Venture,

-Methanex' participation in upstream oil and gas exploration activities. 

During his time as General Counsel for Auckland City, Carl Rowling was involved in many of the more significant issues and transactions for the council including all contract negotiations for the Rugby World Cup, Auckland City’s retail bond issues, the creation of Auckland Council and most of the council’s major infrastructure projects and significant commercial contracts. He also advised on a number of complex governance and local government matters.

Prior to his role at Auckland City, Carl was a senior corporate/commercial partner at two of New Zealand’s leading law firms. Over the more than two decades that he was in private practice Carl worked on many high profile transactions, in most cases as the principal legal advisor. Most recently these included Vector’s takeover of United Networks, BOC’s acquisition of Shell’s LPG business, Auckland City’s acquisition of Westhaven Marina and participation in the Wynyard Point project, Nexan’s acquisition of Olex Cables, private equity bids for Carter Holt Harvey, Griffins, Tegel and Goodman Fielder and major gas contracts for a number of players in New Zealand gas market. In addition he has advised numerous clients on acquisitions and disposals, joint venture and shareholder agreements and complex commercial agreements.

Rowling Law & Strategy has been Duco Events' primary legal advisor throughout the process of securing the world title unification bout between Joseph Parker and Anthony Joshua - one of the biggest sporting events in the world for 2018 . New Major Rugby Event for Brisbane

Rowling Law & Strategy was the key advisor to Duco Australia on the creation of the Brisbane Global Tens, a new annual rugby event that brings together some of the world's premier rugby teams for a two day tournament. We assisted in the contemporaneous negotiation of all contracts with the participating teams, the New Zealand and Australian Rugby Unions, the venue contract, the key funding agreement with the City of Brisbane and State of Queensland and a number of other critical supplier arrangements. read more >>

Te Rarawa and Ngai Takoto Sweetwater Farms Joint Venture with Landcorp

Rowling Law & Strategy acted for Te Rarawa and Ngai Takoto in negotiating and documenting what has been described as a "ground-breaking" joint venture with Landcorp for Sweetwater Farms, one of Northland's largest dairy operations. Sweetwater Farms is now owned by the two iwi as result of their recent Treaty of Waitangi settlement.
